A Complete Guide to Becoming An SFX Makeup Artist

SFX makeup isn't just restricted to a hobby; it's a proper profession. From big productions to theatre plays, an SFX artist is involved in all areas of entertainment projects.

How do you think TV shows like Game of Thrones and The Last of Us show such incredible visuals? They have a dedicated team of professional SFX artists involved! Shows like this will continue to be made well into the future, meaning there is enough room for you and your future SFX career.

If you have a knack for creativity and want to explore a career in SFX makeup, here's a complete guide to becoming an SFX makeup artist!

But first, let’s discuss how SFX makeup differs from regular makeup.

SFX vs. Regular Makeup

SFX makeup is much more than applying foundation to the face.

While regular makeup enhances one’s features, SFX makeup techniques transform a person’s face. Examples include aging effects, scars, wounds, supernatural elements like vampire teeth, etc.

Additionally, SFX makeup involves using prosthetics, liquid latex, silicon, and other products not used in regular makeup.

As an SFX artist, you must be extremely careful about which products are safe to use on the skin and which aren’t, whether or not your clients are allergic to latex, silicon, body paints, etc.

Don't feel overwhelmed! This knowledge comes with learning and practicing, leading us to the first step toward becoming a professional SFX artist.

Becoming An SFX Makeup Artist: Steps to Follow

1. Enroll in SFX Makeup Courses

Like any other profession, relevant qualifications and work experiences are vital to becoming a professional SFX makeup artist.

Many schools offer diplomas in this area of study, and it takes up to a year to complete. In these programs, you get to learn the hands-on experience of working with SFX materials and different techniques used by professionals in the industry.

It’s a great learning experience, especially if you plan on making a career out of your passion for SFX makeup!

You can opt for certifications by enrolling in short SFX makeup courses online. These courses focus on specific SFX techniques, such as working with prosthetics, character makeup, etc. For example, Udemy offers a Special Effects Makeup Level 1 course for beginners.

Your future employers and clients will likely trust and hire you if you have a good portfolio.

2. Prepare an SFX Makeup Kit

An artist is nothing without their tools. Similarly, an SFX makeup artist’s kit should always be stocked up!

As we’ve covered in the above section of the blog post, SFX makeup differs from your everyday, standard makeup, so the makeup kit is also different.

The must-haves for all SFX kits are listed below:

  • Brushes
  • Alcohol wipes
  • Tissues and cotton pads/swabs
  • Fake blood
  • Liquid latex/silicon/gelatin

These are the basic materials needed to execute a great SFX look. You may also need other stuff, but that depends on what look you’re aiming to create!

3. Know Your Tools!

Just investing in high-quality SFX materials isn't enough.

One of the reasons professional SFX artists are so good in their craft is because they know the tools like the back of their hands and know how to use them differently to achieve the desired look.

Most of the knowledge will come as you start practicing with the tools at your disposal to experiment with different creative techniques.

Ask your friends and family members to volunteer so you can practice and hone your skills!

Furthermore, some of the materials used in SFX makeup can cause allergic reactions when in contact with skin; many are unsafe on the eyes and mouth! You should know about the safety of all the products you use on your clients to avoid unpleasant situations.

4. Experiment With Your Creativity

While you should start with the basics, you shouldn’t limit yourself to them exclusively. SFX makeup requires out-of-the-box creativity that keeps evolving.

An example of this is the plethora of different types of supernatural television shows; SFX artists are behind the gory and shockingly-real werewolves, vampires, zombies, etc.

You should keep trying to create different looks; they don't have to be picture-perfect initially, as it takes time and effort to develop a new skill.

As mentioned above, ask your friends and family to spare some time for you on the weekends when you can practice on them.

5. Networking Is Key

SFX makeup industry isn’t very different from the rest in this aspect; networking is crucial for you to jumpstart your career as an SFX makeup artist.

There are two great benefits to this: you get to learn from the best in the industry and observe their techniques that you can incorporate into your work.

Secondly, it’s good to have contacts so when there’s a job opening or a gig, people think of you and recommend you for the job.

Keep in mind that learning never stops! There are many new techniques and skills to learn in the industry; the sky is your limit.
